Have you recently purchased a new car?

There are few things more exciting than jumping in your new vehicle for the first time. From the shining dashboard to the fresh upholstery and dirtless floor mats, this is an experience that many people across Australia are enjoying this month.

According to recently released figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), more than 104,000 new motor vehicles were sold during March. In fact, across 2016, close to 300,000 new vehicles have hit our roads.

Spike in SUV and light commercial range

During March, the FCAI reported a notable increase in the number of new SUV and light commercial vehicles, in particular.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said SUV sales grew 8.3 per cent, while light commercial models topped 7.1 per cent.

"This is in line with the trend over the recent period with significantly increased popularity of the SUV vehicle range. The features of these vehicles are certainly attracting the mainstream Australian buyer," he said.

The chamber also revealed the top selling vehicle for last month, with that honour going to the Hyundai i30, ahead of the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Corolla. Of course, Australians have a love affair with new cars and as the economy continues to pick up, these numbers are expected to grow substantially.

Keeping a new car clean and tidy

A new car is a bit like a pair of new shoes; most people want to ensure their purchase stays nice and clean for as long as possible. While this isn't always achievable, it is important that drivers take adequate precautions when it comes to their new ride.

In fact, purchasing the right seat covers as soon after purchase as possible might be the best form of protection, given the results of a car cleaning survey from English motoring business Halfords.

According to the results, more than half (57 per cent) of women clean the inside of their car regularly, while only 6 per cent of men can say they do the same.

The survey suggested that men enjoy cleaning the outside of their car more than the inside. While this will protect the bodywork, it may not be the best approach to protect the upholstery and seating.
