Make sure road conditions are right on your route.

Poor road surfaces are a fact of life for many drivers, but rather than simply put up with them, is there anything you can do to improve the situation? Aside from investing in comfortable and cushioned seat covers, you might also want to take part in a road survey being carried out by the RACQ.

The group's Unroadworthy Roads Survey 2016 is asking for input from regular road users, who need to identify the worst routes in the state.

"Whether it's a street which goes under every time there's a hint of rain, potholes, a road that's narrow, lacks overtaking chances or has hard-to-see signage, or even a spot where hazardous rubbish gets left constantly, we want to hear about it," said RACQ Spokesperson Lauren Ritchie.

Making the problem known

As Ms Ritchie rightly pointed out, there's very little that can be done to rectify these issues unless the authorities know about them. Bumpy, potholed roads can be made a little more bearable through custom seat covers, but filling them in would, of course, be much more effective in the long run.

This isn't something that is unique to Queensland, either. Efforts are being made up and down the country to make sure people speak up when they encounter a route that's not quite up to standard.

The Western Australian government is another organisation that's encouraging people to speak up. In many cases reports can be filed online, making it easier to raise any concerns you might have with the routes you encounter on a day-to-day basis.

Driving along persistently bad routes can soon start to take its toll on your vehicle. It's well worth avoiding them wherever you can, or getting in touch with the relevant authorities if you have any particular concerns.
